Obituary of Maria dos Anjos Jesus Carvalheiro Oliveira

Maria dos Anjos Jesus Carvalheiro Oliveira, age 87 of New Rochelle, NY passed away on December 2nd in Portugal. She is survived by her husband, Armando de Oliveira; her children, Manuel (Celeste) Oliveira, Licinio (Maria) Oliveira, Maria Selene (Antonio) Cruz, Armando (Susan) Oliveira and Antonio (Connie) Oliveira; her brother Manuel Silvestre Carvalheiro, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Victor Oliveira and her sister Luzinda Caetano. Maria dos Anjos was born in Fontinha, Febres, Portugal to Abel Santos Carvalheiro and Maria das Mercês De Jesus Silvestre on April 5, 1935. She married Armando da Conceição Oliveira in Febres on November 28, 1959 and they were married for over 63 years. She had six children whom she raised almost solely while her husband worked in France to make a better life for the family. The family immigrated to the United States on September 12, 1976. Maria dos Anjos was a very skilled gardener, growing her own food in Portugal to feed her family. When she moved to the United States, she continued to cultivate her vegetable garden and devoted more time to growing flowers. Her love for roses and dahlias were evident year after year by the colorful display and variety of her flower garden on the corner of Webster Avenue. Many people would stop to admire the colorful and abundant display of flowers. She was a woman of great faith and an example of deep devotion to God. She prayed the rosary and went to church daily. She looked forward to creating magnificent bouquets from her garden to offer our lady at St. Joseph and Blessed Sacrament churches multiple times a week. Maria dos Anjos had a very deep love and devotion to her family. She loved to gather everyone for Sunday dinner where she would make delicious meals with several courses and homemade bread to share with family and friends. At Christmas time, she would spend a full day making “filhóses” to share with loved ones. She sacrificed so much to give her children and grandchildren a better life. Her deep love, devotion and faith will remain in our hearts forever. May we all learn from her example and make the world a brighter place. Funeral service will be held at St. Joseph's church, 280 Washington Avenue, New Rochelle, NY 10801 on December 16th at 11am with a rosary beginning at 10:30 am.Burial will follow at Beechwoods cemetery in New Rochelle, NY Visitations will be held at New Rochelle Funeral Home, 104 4th street, New Rochelle, NY 10801 on December 15th between 5-7pm.
